From Senju’s celebrated 36 Views of Mount Fuji – Shunga Reimagined series, Hanamizake (Sake Drunk While Viewing the Cherry Blossoms) embodies the perfect harmony of beauty, nature, and eroticism.  The work pays homage to the centuries-old Japanese custom of hanami—the ritual of appreciating cherry blossoms while drinking sake—by merging sensuality and transience in a single poetic composition.
 
At the heart of the image, a woman reclines in quiet ecstasy, her green-striped kimono falling open as her hand self-caresses while being penetrated.  The scene is framed within a circular window, a recurring motif in Senju’s Fuji series, symbolizing a fleeting glimpse into an intimate world.  To the side, Mount Fuji rises softly through morning haze, while fully-bloomed cherry blossoms and a sake bottle rest nearby—icons of renewal, pleasure, and impermanence.
