Rare - 1890 - Byobu - Antique Japanese Folding Screen - Silk Gold Dragon

SKU: lig728

Original & authentic Meiji Period Japanese Folding Screen (Byobu) with a fantastic hand-stitched gold silk dragon motif!

Artist:  Unknown

Date:  Meiji Period Japan, c. 1890s

Description: 100% Japanese genuine & authentic original antique byobu.  Fantastic silk artwork of an Asian Dragon spanning across and adorning each panel of the folding screen.

Condition is quite good for its age, with most of the wear coming near the dragon's tail area, and one slit of about 7 cm long at the very bottom of one panel (see the second & third last photos here).  The good news is is that the silk is black, so even the tear is barely noticeable, as you can see from all of the photos provided.  There are a few tiny chips in the metal fittings/framework, but no major flaws to note of.  The old strings used to attach each panel together have also fallen apart due to age, but we have already replaced those strings with the exact same type of craft strings, so you needn't worry about stringing it up and assembling it yourself as it's already been done and taken care of.  In short, once you receive it and pull it out of its packing, it's ready to be displayed as is.  Please see and judge from photos.

Height measures 106 cm, each of the four panels measures approximately 32 cm wide and total width of the byobu when fully opened is 129 cm.

A stunning antique piece of Japanese art!  No doubt this item would be the attention-grabbing centerpiece of any home or office!
