1860 - Shunga - Surimono - Clutching Arms
c.1860 Utagawa School Shunga Surimono – Superb Edo-Era Erotic Art with Rich Color & Detail
An outstanding original Utagawa School shunga surimono from the late Edo period, circa 1860. This intimate scene is masterfully rendered with bold, confident linework and a vivid color palette that remains strong after more than 160 years. The composition captures both tenderness and playful eroticism, framed by an elaborate interior and scenic background panel.
Measures 12.5 cm x 9 cm. Condition is very good for its age with just a faint vertical centrefold line visible on the reverse. Colors remain vibrant, embossing is still prominent, and the fine paper retains its beautiful pigment bleed-through on the verso, a hallmark of authentic surimono period production. The luxurious red, blue, and green tones are complemented by delicately shaded garments and a finely detailed setting.
A superb example of mid-19th century Japanese erotic shunga woodblock printing, embodying the Utagawa School’s signature blend of sensual storytelling, decorative richness, and technical mastery. Highly desirable for collectors seeking authentic, well-preserved Edo-period shunga artwork.
