Authentic Meiji period original, 1870, Japanese shunga erotic art woodblock print picture book set of three volumes by Koikawa Shozan (1821-1907). From his six volume series, Shaka hassho zoku yamato bunko, published and dated c.1870. Shunga books measure 22.1 cm x 14.8 cm closed. Very good colors and impressions. Condition is very good with just some light wear. There are a total of 29 color pages of shunga woodblock print artwork here, and another 27 black & white pages of shunga artwork. Remaining pages are kanji text pages. Please see and judge from photos. Very nice Japanese shunga erotic artwork throughout the books with some deluxe printing techniques, including the use of mica (metallic pigments) & urushi-e (black lacquer).
Some wonderful Japanese erotic art scenes enclosed, including the well-known bear interloper scene. A fine set of three well-preserved antique Japanese shunga books.
Shozan also produced this series in the Edo Period, 1854, and because it proved to be so popular amongst the masses, he made it again in the Meiji Period, c.1870 with a few subtle differences. Most notably, the Meiji Period artwork here all has elaborate bordering, whereas the Edo Period version does not.
