1838 - EISEN - DELUXE shunga - Classic Winter Erotica
Authentic Edo period original, c.1838, Japanese DELUXE shunga erotic art woodblock by Keisai EISEN (1790-1848). From the shunga series, Shunshoku hana no shizuku (Erotic Drops of Flower Petals). Deluxe shunga picture measures 22.7 cm x 28 cm. Superb colors and impressions, along with black lacquer, mica (metallic pigments), and gauffrage. Gorgeous, rich colors and wonderful metallic sheen throughout! This is perhaps the nicest, most beautiful deluxe shunga series of any kind I have ever come across from the Edo Period. Personally, I've never had a series nearly 200 years old in such extraordinary shape! They look as is they could have been made just yesterday; that's how beautiful these erotic woodblock prints are! I think you'll be hard to come by a shunga series this old - by any artist! - in finer condition than this! Condition is very good, near mint with some light wear. No backing. Please see and judge from photos.
Simply a stunningly classic deluxe shunga scene with its own title, "'Drops of Melting Snow' (Yukidoke no shizuku). A woman wearing a heavy over-kimono (shikake), hood (zukin), and tall geta has a tumble in the snow with her lover. Her umbrella acts as a shield against the cold. The insert image (koma-e) illustrates a village and bridge scene with the inscription, 'all covered in snow.'" excerpt from P.166 of Japanese Erotic Fantasies by Chris Uhlenbeck and Margarita Winkel.
