1837 - KUNIYOSHI - Shunga woodblock print - Hairy Man 1/3 - The Abduction
Two authentic Edo period original, c.1837, Japanese shunga erotic art woodblock print pictures by Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1797-1861). From his series, Shunshoku irifune cho. Larger shunga picture measures approximately 28 cm x 22.1 cm. Other single panel picture measures 15.4 cm x 22.1 cm. Good colors and impressions. Condition is decent+/good with some wear and soiling, wormage. No backing.
There are actually four total scenes to this hairy man abduction theme, but I've included the first two together here and offering as one total lot.
The single panel is the very first scene as the two lovers steal away in the middle of the night. Perhaps a young couple escaping to prolong their forbidden relationship, as the young male carries a bag of rations over his shoulder.
The next scene, the double-paged panel, is where their plan goes awry as the young man clearly injures himself somehow. This is where their benefactor stumbles upon them, or so they think him to be, but he has much darker intentions which are soon to be revealed in the following scenes.
