1830 - Shunga Book X 2 - The Original Suicide Lovers
Authentic Edo period, 1830 Japanese erotic art shunga woodblock print picture book by Kunisada Utagawa (1786 - 1865). From his series, Fuzoku sangokushi. Approximately 25 total shunga picture pages enclosed as it is two volumes attached to one another, thus making one thick book. Most of the pictures are shown here, but not all. Remaining pages are kanji text pages. Shunga picture book measures approximately 15.5 cm x 22.6 cm x 1.8 cm thick when closed. Excellent colors, impressions! Condition is fair due to some wormage present.
Included in this book is one of the more famous scenes by Kunisada of two lovers committing suicide as they thrown themselves off a pier into the sea below. Their bodies are eventually recovered by some fishermen/ruffians. This suicide lovers scene is said to have influenced Keishu in his rendition of it here.
