Japanese original shunga woodblock print picture presenting an extraordinary anatomical study of the “ideal” female genitalia. Completely isolated from a conventional erotic encounter, the enlarged vagina fills almost the entire composition, rendered with exceptionally fine linework and meticulous attention to anatomical detail. The unusual presentation gives the work the appearance of an Edo-period erotic anatomical study and makes a fascinating counterpart to the male anatomical works from this Kitagawa School series.
Of particular interest is the direct artistic connection between these c.1800 Kitagawa School anatomical studies and the later shunga of Keisai Eisen. Eisen copied this distinctive manner of presenting enlarged and isolated genitalia and carried the style into his own anatomical erotic works of the 1820–1845 period. An exceptionally unusual and rare example of the more instructional side of Edo-period shunga.
