c.1775 Tsukioka Settei Nanshoku (homoerotic) Shunga Woodblock Print
Original Edo-Period Japan Homoerotic Scene
A genuine original Edo-period shunga woodblock print by Tsukioka Settei (1710–1786), dating to c.1775.
Settei is regarded as one of the refined masters of early ukiyo-e book illustration, celebrated for his elegant linework, flowing compositions, and quietly sophisticated erotic imagery. Works of this period are increasingly difficult to locate individually on the market, particularly authentic nanshoku (male-male love) scenes such as this example.
Condition is very good for its age with strong, clear impressions. Some minor wear, soiling, slight wormage, and a few pinholes. No backing. Please see and judge from the photos provided.
Dimensions:
19.8 cm x 15.8 cm
This boldly intimate composition presents two male lovers absorbed in a moment of intense physical and emotional pleasure, rendered with the quiet elegance characteristic of Settei’s finest shunga work. Despite the explicit subject matter, the artist’s restrained linework, flowing robes, and balanced composition create an atmosphere that feels surprisingly refined and almost meditative. The result is a striking example of Edo-period nanshoku imagery that blends sensuality, tenderness, and aesthetic sophistication in equal measure.
