1775 - Gay Shunga - Homoerotic Art - Teasing Lovers
c.1775 Tsukioka Settei Nanshoku (homoerotic) Shunga Woodblock Print
Original Edo-Period Japan Homoerotic Scene
A genuine original Edo-period shunga woodblock print by Tsukioka Settei (1710–1786), dating to c.1775.
Settei is regarded as one of the refined masters of early ukiyo-e book illustration, celebrated for his elegant linework, flowing compositions, and quietly sophisticated erotic imagery. Works of this period are increasingly difficult to locate individually on the market, particularly authentic nanshoku (male-male love) scenes such as this example.
Condition is very good for its age with strong, clear impressions. Some minor wear, soiling, slight wormage, and a few pinholes. No backing. Please see and judge from the photos provided.
Dimensions:
19.8 cm x 15.8 cm
This lively and unusually playful composition captures a moment of flirtation and teasing intimacy between two male companions, a quality that gives the scene a warmth and spontaneity rarely found in more formal shunga works. Settei’s fluid linework and relaxed interior setting create an atmosphere that feels personal and affectionate rather than purely erotic, highlighting the emotional closeness and subtle humor rarely present within Edo-period nanshoku imagery.
