1775 - Gay Shunga - Homoerotic Art - Nanshoku Vignettes
c.1775 Tsukioka Settei Nanshoku (homoerotic) Shunga Woodblock Print
Original Edo-Period Japan Homoerotic Scene
A genuine original Edo-period shunga woodblock print by Tsukioka Settei (1710–1786), dating to c.1775.
Settei is regarded as one of the refined masters of early ukiyo-e book illustration, celebrated for his elegant linework, flowing compositions, and quietly sophisticated erotic imagery. Works of this period are increasingly difficult to locate individually on the market, particularly authentic nanshoku (male-male love) scenes such as this example.
Condition is very good for its age with strong, clear impressions. Some minor wear, soiling, and a few pinholes. No backing. Please see and judge from the photos provided.
Dimensions:
19.8 cm x 15.8 cm
This unusual page combines written passages with two smaller inset homoerotic scenes, creating a composition that feels more narrative and conversational than overtly sensual. Rather than emphasizing dramatic eroticism, Settei presents moments of quiet intimacy and companionship, framed within an elegant literary layout characteristic of early Edo-period erotic books. The restrained treatment and miniature format give the work a refined, almost anecdotal quality rarely preserved in surviving nanshoku material of the period.
